Improving navigation and accessibility across Balens

In my current role at PIB, a specialist insurance intermediary group operating across the UK and Europe, I worked across Balens' digital ecosystem, improving both the public website and secure portal.
My Role
User Research, Information architecture, user interface design.
Impact
The redesigned navigation for Balens UK is intended to improve scanability and reduce friction, helping users access relevant content more quickly.
For the secure portal, I conducted an in-depth accessibility audit, delivering prioritised recommendations to support WCAG compliance.
Navigation
Balens' existing navigation presented content as a long, unstructured list with limited grouping or context. This made it difficult to scan and required users to rely on prior knowledge to find relevant options.

I redesigned the navigation into a structured mega menu, adding a clear introductory section and grouped sub-categories to improve orientation and scanability.
The mobile navigation was difficult to scan, requiring users to scroll through dense content and navigate multiple pages without clear direction.
In my redesign, I introduced structured, expandable categories and clear entry points, designed to improve orientation and faster access to relevant options.
Secure Portal Accessibility Audit
For the Secure Portal, I conducted a comprehensive accessibility audit, uncovering key usability barriers and recommendations to support WCAG compliance and the overall user experience.

I reviewed page structures, colour contrasts, readability, navigation, mobile responsiveness and language clarity, equipping the team with actionable insights to make the portal more inclusive.
